There are several landmarks on the Princeton campus.

  • FitzRandolph Gate, the entrance to the Princeton campus from Nassau Street, was built in 1905, and restored in 2005.
  • Nassau Hall and McLean House, built in 1756, are the only original buildings on campus. McLean House was originally the residence of the college’s president.
  • Prospect Garden, behind Prospect House, was designed by Ellen Wilson, wife of Woodrow Wilson, while he served as University president.
  • Cleveland Tower was erected as a memorial to President Grover Cleveland. He was a trustee of the University.
  • Lake Carnegie was built and donated by Andrew Carnegie to create an intercollegiate rowing facility for the rowing crew. It involved building a dam on the Millstone River, which flooded the swamps around the Washington Road Bridge. It is now considered one of the finest rowing facilities in the country, and Princeton has one of the top rowing programs in the nation.

The town of Princeton has a population of about 30,000, and covers an area of 18.1 square miles. Princeton is within easy reach of major urban centers, including Philadelphia and Trenton to the south, and New York and Newark to the north.
